High School Sports!
It is in many ways the heart beat and pulse of the community to watch our youth participate in activities outside the walls of the classrooms that trap them 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Their creativity and youthful exuberance is on full display on the athletic fields. While the sports programs of the recreational department, middle and high schools in Addison County allow an outlet for these stored energies they will undoubtedly yield a sidelined (and frustrated) kid; one who just wants to play. Wells Physical Therapy Services sees many injuries sustained during these various extracurricular activities.
No one wishes ill upon those who bring us to our feet with shouts of encouragement under the lights on Friday nights, but the simple fact is that some sports are more likely to result in injury. We found some data that we would like to share regarding the injuries sustained by our high school kids. The following data is full of information, and while statistics cannot predict what will happen on a given field, or to a specific child, the information reviewed was of such a large sample of high school sports participants that we can safely assume that the averages will apply to our community.

All injury rates increase for competition, but some increase at a much higher rate, noting that football injuries occur at 4x the rate of overall exposure. Interesting to see that just as many injuries occur in girl’s soccer as in boys ice hockey! With most other sports, both boys and girls see their injury rates double within the competitive arena.
In competition, the injuries were categorized as follows: 37% involving sprain or strain, 11% fractures, 10% contusion and bruising, and 27% concussion. The remaining 15% was listed as “other.”
As mentioned above, sprains and strains were most common injuries when looking across all sports, both boys and girls with injuries to the head and ankle (as seen below) are the most common body parts affected.

Ankle sprains can be the most frustrating injury to recover from, but Wells Physical Therapy Services knows how to support the ankle and its healing process while maximizing your recovery time to get a player on the field or court faster. Should an injury be severe enough to require surgery, we can help prepare the player for recovery with pre-operative exercise and education including what to expect, and how short/long the recovery process will be. Following surgery, we will work with the surgeon to develop and implement a protocol to ensure the recovery will be as quick and as successful as possible. Or better yet, schedule a pre-season sports performance assessment and training for your student athlete! We can help to not only maximize your son or daughter’s performance on the athletic field but also reduce the risk of him or her sustaining an injury during the season.
Injuries can be scary, but knowing you have a community to support the players in all aspects of the game, in the competition arena, or in treatment for an injury, makes the game more fun!
